‘Call For A Search'

It was just a vague memory that came
From nowhere – you know the kind of thing
That brought back a distant day, from a long gone place
That I'd never thought of since

Now, it makes me sad to think that what we had
Has effectively been lost to time
And that, somewhere in this mad existence, you presumably
Occupy another life

It's not an issue that I can't help but think about
But when day after week after month after year come round
Something deep inside speculates how
You've been, since you vanished in the crowd

Where are you now?

Well, I just wondered - ‘cause I miss you
There's a gap I must submit to
Was there someone that you found?
Are you lying beneath the ground?
You just seemed to disappear –
And it was better with you

It was the slightest trace of a recollection that gave
Me reason to contemplate that
An obscure mid-Monday in an average mid-decade
Has alarming power to bring pain back

I unreservedly respect the reasons why you left -
All I hope for is that they were true
But I can only guess what it was I said –
What could I have done to you?

It's not an obsession that I can't live without
But when second after minute after hour after day go down
Something in my mind brings it back out
And you go through my mind every time the doorbell sounds
